I first started my blog way back September 2006. Back then, I had not carefully done research into web hosting. If I had taken some time to do that, I would have found out about the top 10 web hosting companies of the time.
I was initially comfortable with my web hosting company until traffic to my blog took a sharp decline. At this time it dawned on me that I needed to contact customer service for help and that’s just what I did. Much to my chagrin I discovered that their claims about a 24 hours customer service were nothing but empty claims. Nobody picked up my calls and when I decided to contact the company through their live chat service, it was to no avail. I eventually out of desperation attempted using their ticketing system (similar to emails) in order to get answers that were not forthcoming, not that day, not the next day, not until about three to four days later. Prior to that experience, I did not know that other meanings existed for the caption “live 27/7.” Well I just did in a disappointing way.
Never fall for the trick sentence ‘Unlimited Bandwidth and Disk Space’.
I had no other option than to transfer my webhosting to another company (not my current web hosts) whose identity I would not disclose in order to protect their business. I had done good research into finding out which companies actually live up to their claims. This company offered a great service with cheap packages, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited disk space. Of course, I chose to patronize them.
The truth about resource usage:
Days rolled into weeks and weeks into months and in just a few months since I started using this web hosting company, I received a mail with complaints that I was using excessively their server’s resources. I responded by questioning their claims about unlimited bandwidth and disk space. Much unlike the first company, my response came promptly. I was told that disk space and bandwidth is totally different from resource usage. Their advertisement was just a sort of bait to attract people to their cheap packages.
In only a little while, I resumed my determined quest for the best web hosting service providers. After much searching activity and a lot of precautions of course learnt from experience, I came across a new hosting company – Hostgator after months of searching. Now I am more than happy and very satisfied. Their Technical Support, Live Chat, Toll Free and Ticketing System all contribute to my satisfaction. What I like most about them is the provision of a transparent system that enable me to monitor how much resource I am using.
On a final note, if you want to start a blog, I advise you to try out the web hosting services of the company you have in mind before you waste your time and money on incompetent providers. To do this, visit their website and check if they have a demo of their control panel. If they don’t have one, request for it, this will make you know what CPU they are using. If they use only 2 CPUs, troubles may lie ahead.
