Hostgator have an excellent and popular web hosting service which I have been using for 7 months. I consider it not out of place to write a review based on my experience with them. This review is based on the Baby Croc Package which I use and my experience with their support services.
To begin, I will note that the price plan for the package I chose is really great; only $9.95 monthly via paypal. You can subscribe monthly without having any compulsory long term deal with them if it so pleases you. This is really good for experimenting with the web as you may have a change in plans and decide to move your site at any time. The chances are that you may not consider such an option.
The hub of the Hostgator shared hosting package is the cpanel control system. With the Baby Croc Package, I can theoretically host an unlimited number of domains, have an unlimited number of mysq1 data bases, all the traffic I can squeeze into 6GB of hard drive space to store my website files. It is a great offer for small website webmasters and even fair sized businesses can comfortably run on this package. Practically, it is not likely that the new web entrepreneur will even come close to using up all the resources in the package.
Other important features of the cpanel implementation include Fanastico a script that enables you to install many web applications with just one click of a button. Word Press – a popular web blog application is included in Hostgator Fanastico implementation.
The MySQL setup control system has phpmyadmin which is a great tool for manipulating MySQL stored data. It is very easy to backup every file in my FTP folder and download the backups directly on my PC. Typical of most web hosts, Hostgator routinely performs its own backup. I tried all 3 types of web mail and they work. They are just the thing for webmasters who want access to a mail even when away from their main computer. The Cpanel set up offers statistic soft wares like AWStats, Webalizer, and a raw log manager. I gladly discovered how much detail I could get for each of my domains.
One thing I don’t like about the cpanel is its implementation of dns control, though one can get round this issue by requesting for support. This of course will only be an issue for webmasters that favor full technical control. It doesn’t affect the average webmaster so long as the underlying dns generation tools work well.
Technical support via web chat is superb though I got used to the phone service. Hostgator also offers email support which I have used over time and received prompt response.
The websites I have on Hostgator enjoy great uptime, and I have not yet caught them not loading. Very few times the server response had been slow and this could be as little as an hour in every month that I have the package. Based on my pleasant experiences, I fully recommend Hostgator to you.
