Gone are the days when people used washing boards for cleaning their daily laundry that required lot of labour. With modern home appliances at hand, such as washing machines it had made the daily household task of cleaning clothes much easier. Not only this, it had also encouraged surpluses in terms of quantity of water consumed for washing clothes, and at the same time saving energy and reducing the amount of chemicals and harmful gases discharged into the waterways and environment.

There are certain tips which can help consumers to put an eco friendly edge while washing their clothes and at the same save their hard earned money. There are different types of washing machines that come with all sorts of pre wash treatments to remove tough stains. Apart from the toxic chemicals that come in elaborate packing, there are several home made cheaper alternatives that can offer greener environment as well. Consumers can try spraying vinegar to remove stains and deodorant marks on their garments just prior to the wash, or apply paste of baking soda mixed with little cold water and keep it for some time before it is put inside the washer machine. Individuals may also pre soak their whites with a tablespoon of Borax for about 30 minutes that will give dazzling and brighter look.

Taking into account the efficiency of latest washers and the detergents used, it may not require consumers to soak their clothes in warm water. In certain conditions when the temperature is extremely low and when it is required to dissolve detergents, consumers may need to use warm water.  By using cold water, individuals can save on electricity bills to heat water and thereby help in extending the life of heaters.

Consumers can save lot of energy and water if they resist washing small quantity of clothes in their washers. If consumers need to wash a small quantity of laundry, they should ideally consider hand washing them as it also saves the time required to adjust the correct water levels and other settings in their washers.

The modern washing machines are designed to offer quick washing time, enabling users to wash their clothes within few minutes, thereby saving energy that is associated with environmental impact. Due to reduced washing cycle, it will ensure extended life of clothing and the washer machine as well. It can also save the extra amount of water which is actually wasted. Consumers may experiment with wash settings and gradually reduce the spinning cycle to find their sweet pot.

In these days washing machines are equipped to operate by consuming less water. The front loading machines are more efficient and consume about 10 gallons for single wash, while the top loading machines consume about 4 times more water for every wash. For all those environment conscious people the front loading machines can be more appealing than the top loading machines even when these are a little expensive.

As cleaning clothes in washing machines involve huge consumption of water and energy, there are some useful washing tips that can greatly reduce the overall impact on environment. Moreover, it can also help consumers to save more on their wallet for their effort.
