With the advent of the internet, and all the information that is transported in this fashion, there was a great need for companies to have some kind of security training put in place to stop company secrets from leaking out. Security certification also aids in the fight with insecurity and every company should have it.
It is obvious by all the leaks of embarrassing information to the press these days that something is going drastically wrong in many companies. Things not meant for publication are put right out there and the company is usually left with egg on its face. Even end of year results which are not meant to be published at that time can bring a vote of no confidence from the share holders if not presented properly, but to the hacker or spy, this is a coup indeed.
These days, people who handle any kind of financial information for a company must be trained up to certain levels and have some sort of refresher course every now and then. They are imbued with a sense of propriety which tells them not to impart any kind of information even if it is just around the water cooler!
Some companies have taken it upon themselves to run courses where personnel from all kinds of companies can attend. Or, they can also come into a company and do the work on site. Either way, they show the personnel how they should conduct themselves and how, by giving out this kind of secret information, they could actually end up in jail depending on the sensitivity of it.
The need to keep all the company secrets become very apparent when there are other companies in the same business who are very competitive. Inventions, particularly in the computer market, are highly prized since the revenue they bring in is absolutely phenomenal. If these secrets are leaked out before the date on which they are launched, competing companies can get the jump on them and bring out something very similar at a lower price. Of course, they did not do the research and development of the item so they do not have to factor this in to the end price meaning that they reap all the benefits without doing the work.
Governments have their share of problems when it comes to keeping secrets. Their armed forces and equipment information are highly prized by countries who want to invade or take over a protectorate so here their staff has to be even more on their guard.
Because we are all used to operating computers, often on the internet, the problems of hackers has become very serious indeed. Governments have had young people hack into their defense systems to their dismay and when this happens, the media goes into a feeding frenzy.
However, with the right kind of training, and with the right personnel of course, these incidents should be kept to a minimum. Having clever people who understand the importance of these facts is, indeed, paramount for a company to stay successful.
