The Danish Great Belt (Storebælt) is a sea-pass between the key Danish islands of Zealand and Funen. Effectively parting Denmark in two. The Belt was from the end of the 19th century, travelable by the Great Belt ferryboats up untill the islands were connected by the Great Belt Connection in the years of 1997–98.

The Great Belt comprises of a road hanging bridge and railroad track tunnel between Zealand and the island Sprogø, as well as a box girder bridge between Sprogø and Funen. The Great Belt Bridge commonly refers to the hanging bridge, although it may besides be used to mean the beam bridge or the connection in its entirety. The hanging bridge, known as the East Bridge, has an encredible main span of 1.6 km. The bridge is contrived by the Danish architectural fellowship, Dissing+Weitling.

The link replaces the ferrying service of process which had been the original means of crossing the Great Belt. Afterward more than five decades of guesswork and debate, the decision to manufacture the connection was made in 1986. While it was in the beginning meant to finish the railroad line link 3 years before opening the road connection, the link was opened to rail traffic in 1997 and road traffic in 1998. The link is the broadest construction task in Danish contruction history.

The link has downsized traveling times significantly, previously taking something close to an hour by ferry, the Great Belt is now covered in something like 10 minutes. The construction of the Great Belt connection and the Øresund Bridge have, together, enabled one to ride from Europe to Sweden and the remain of Scandinavia through Denmark, providing an option to the by far lengthier mainland road over Finland. Different than on the once, now closed ferryboat, bicyclers are not granted access to use the bridge over.

Denmark is made out of Jutland and a litle more 400 islands of which the biggest are Zealand and Funen. Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, is based on Zealand.

The Great Belt is about 60 km long and the width spans from16 to 32 km. It streams round two major islands: Samsø at the northern part and Langeland to the south. At Sprogø the Great Belt parts into the East Channel and the West Channel, both traversed by the Great Belt Bridge. Too a tunnel passes below the East Channel. The most important is by far, the route crosswise the Great Belt between Funen and Zealand. Throughout the years, storms and hard winters have oftentimes broken up ferry services across the Danish Great Belt.

In June of 1987 the Danish Parliament licensed the construction of a connection crosswise the Great Belt. Next 12 years of extreme structure work, H.M. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark kicked off on June, 1998 what had then become the hugest engineering project in the history of Denmark, The Great Belt fixed link.

The Connection contains the East Bridge, a 6,7 km. long hanging bridge between Zealand and the island of Sprogø, a 6,6 km long combined rail and road bridgework between Sprogø and Funen. Also an 8 kilometers long buried rail tunnel between Zealand and Sprogø.

The 2 highest points in Denmark, are the East Bridge's 2 power pylons. They are reaching an amazing 254 m higher up than sea level.

Barring unforeseen issues and special weather, the Great Belt is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Signs provide impotant info on road conditions on the bridge. Also they warn of possible delays. These signs are operated by the police in accord with signs from anemometers located along the East Bridge.
