People have a variety of perspectives on the breeding of birds. Many believe that bird breeding is morally wrong. Others believe that it's ok, unless you do it for money. And, still others believe that there is nothing wrong with breeding birds at all.
In reality, however, unlike with horses, there is not a lot of money in breeding birds. If you want to be a bird breeder, you had better have a real love for birds. Otherwise, you will not only lose your investment, but you will be miserable doing it.
However you ought to also be careful of going into the business of bird breeding on a whim, or because you believe that you might love the experience. The lives of these animals should mean more to you than simply an experience that you gain for yourself.
If you decide to be a breeder, you have basically taken on the responsibility of caring for them until you give them to a new owner. So, it's possible that you could carry that responsibility for years. Unless, you are willing to take on this responsibility, breeding is probably not for you.
If you want to be responsible about bird breeding, you have to be willing to learn about the species. Casual observation can only take you so far. Before you begin your breeding program, go to the library and check out all of the books that you can that address the bird species that you are interested in breeding.
In addition, breeding means that, unless you have room and resources on your property to care for the offspring, that you be willing and able to find them suitable homes, once they have grown. There's no sense in breeding birds only to find out that no one wants them. Therefore, unless you plan on keeping all of the offspring yourself, its incumbent on you to make sure that there is demand for that type of bird species.
Some people just have a natural love and affinity for animals. And if this describes you, you should have very little difficulty with the breeding process. Because, after you've completed your research and are finished with setting up the birds ideal environment, your primary undertaking will be feeding them and making sure that ther offspring grows strong and healthy.
There are different philosophies as to how birds should be raised. Some breeders believe in letting the parents care for the fledglings with occasional handling by the owner to get them used to being handled by humans. Others, believe in letting the parent mostly care for the fledglings in the early days, so they inherit their parent's resistance to disease. But, as soon as possible, they will wean them away from their parents. This is because they want the fledgling to bond with humans instead of birds.
On the other hand, if you have a real love for birds, and are ready and willing to accept the responsibility of breeding birds, this could turn out to be one of the most enjoyable hobbies that you have ever been engaged in.
